I slept like a log last night after the crisis with Leif and spending the day out on the farm. I wake picturing Dalton carrying Leif down the trail. I’m done for and I don’t care. Dalton can have my heart for a week or for life. I’m tired of resisting what’s developing between us.

I go into the inn for the morning, and then over to the farm to load up for the farmer’s market in San Luis. I’m heading down early with the toddler clothes I collected.

A few weeks back I met a girl named Vicki at the soup kitchen when I was serving there. She’s a teen mom with a one-year-old boy. We talked for a while. She lives in apartments for teen moms and doesn’t have a lot of resources. I arranged to meet her today to give her some produce from the farm and to bring her some clothes for her son.

When I get to San Luis, I park near the soup kitchen where I asked Vicki to meet me. It’s only a few blocks up from the north end of the farmer’s market. I give her the two bags of clothes and a bag of fruit and vegetables. She hugs me and we talk a little.

I hear my name being called as I’m saying goodbye to Vicki.

“Amelia!”

I look around. It sounds like Dalton’s voice, but I don’t think he’d be here. Then I see him across the street waving. Another man is standing next to him. He’s blond and a bit shorter than Dalton, but the way he’s dressed shouts money and status. He must be Dalton’s partner Jeff.

I wave back and hold up my pointer finger to tell him I’ll be crossing to meet him. Vicki has already turned to go, but I don’t want her to feel uncomfortable, so I’ll go to Dalton instead of having him come over here.

When the light turns, I cross the street.

“Hi,” I say.

“Hey,” he says, giving me a look that lingers as our eyes seem unable to break contact. Between the kiss on our hike and yesterday’s rescue, my walls are smashed to smithereens and I find myself surprisingly having to fight the urge to leap into Dalton’s arms right now.

The man next to Dalton clears his throat.

“Oh. Yeah,” Dalton stammers a bit. “This is Jeff. Jeff, this is Amelia.”

Jeff and I exchange greetings.

“So, what brings you here to SLO?” I ask Dalton.

“I wanted to show Jeff the bigger cities around this part of the coast. We were looking for parking when I saw you standing talking to that girl. When we found a spot, we walked up here to say hi.”

“Who was that you were talking to?” he asks.

“Oh, just a friend here in town,” I tell him. I’m protective of the young women I help. Besides, my volunteer work feels private. Most people don’t know what I do when I come to San Luis besides run our family stand at the farmer’s market, and I like having this one thing that’s outside the reach of all the eyes and ears in Cypress Cove.
